I’ve always – or, at least, as far back as I can cast my mind back since having the ambition to be a rock star or an actress – known that I would grow up to do social work jobs. I think it started from growing up in a rather rough area that, for all its problems, is still my home and I really care about it. I’ve always thought of social services jobs as a way to put something back. social worker jobs make a difference to the long term future of our nearby community, for my children’s sake if nothing else.
And so I went to the University of the West of England in Bristol to do a social work degree. I had planned to organise a gap year upon finishing university and head to Bolivia to volunteer as an English teacher in a rural school. It would be an amazing way to combine some travelling with an experience that could only leave me in a stronger position, both considering my employability and in terms of my ability to do a good job. However, since I had managed to do some part time experience in my second year, I was lucky enough to be able to find a job in Bristol straight after my graduation. I thought it would be best to get some experience under my belt, not to mention money in my pockets, before I went off around the globe! I worked for a year and off I went.
My year in South America flew by like a dream, and after feeling the bump of reality when I came back I was as committed as ever to follow my career. The only difficulty was that the situation had changed somewhat, in the sense that it was noticeably more tricky to find a job. This was a bit frustrating, because I was keen to get on and do something worthwhile with my life. Happily it didn’t take me too long to find the job I wanted.
After a few months of sleeping at my parents’ house in Derby, where I was volunteering at my local youth club, I managed to find a new source of social work jobs in the form of a social services jobs agency online, called Social Work and Care Jobs. I was already using a pair of other agencies, and hadn’t heard anything back so far, so I wasn’t really expecting much from it. Nevertheless I uploaded my CV and applied for several social worker jobs vacancies I saw listed. It wasn’t long before my gap year was a beautiful, distant memory, and I was back in the real word, and I loved it!
